Nepal Communist Party-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has emphasized the need for Members of Parliament (MPs) to appoint effective parliamentary assistants who can efficiently utilize information technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the party’s parliamentary department program on Sunday, Pokharel stressed that MPs should prioritize appointing assistants who possess political awareness and can make their parliamentary responsibilities more effective, rather than choosing personal or household staff.
Pokharel acknowledged the necessity and naturalness of MPs having personal assistants but emphasized the importance of selecting individuals who can enhance their work. He stated, ‘While appointing personal assistants, we should choose individuals who can make our work more effective. They should not be limited to household helpers but rather be proficient in information technology or have received AI training to utilize it effectively.’
Pokharel’s remarks come as the party faces criticism for lagging behind in the virtual world. He highlighted the growing importance of information technology and digital media, suggesting that MPs should appoint assistants who can effectively present their work in the digital sphere.
He also emphasized the need for MPs to be given responsibilities based on their knowledge and capabilities, allowing them to effectively contribute to parliamentary discussions. Pokharel believes that if MPs are allowed to speak in parliament based on their interests, expertise, and knowledge, their presentations can be more effective.
‘If we can practice leading based on knowledge, expertise, and awareness, rather than adhering to hierarchical protocols, we can be more effective,’ Pokharel said.
