Chhathar Municipality in Tehrathum district has launched a unique program to encourage large families and ensure the financial security of newborn children.
The ‘Child Life Security Program’ provides a savings scheme for newborns, with the municipality depositing a certain amount of money in the child’s name. The amount increases with the number of children in the family, with the first child receiving Rs 5,000, the second Rs 10,000, the third Rs 15,000, and the fourth and subsequent children Rs 20,000.
The program aims to provide financial security to children from birth to adulthood and encourage large families in a region where the population is declining. Chhathar Municipality has also launched other social security programs, including a ‘Respect for Single Elderly Men’ program, which provides annual cash assistance and respect to single elderly men.
The municipality has also introduced a ‘Home-Based Health Care Program’ for elderly citizens, which provides health check-ups, medicine, and health counseling at their doorstep. Additionally, the ‘People’s Housing Program’ provides assistance to economically disadvantaged, Dalit, and homeless families to build safe houses.
Other programs include the ‘Malami Khaja Support Program’, which provides support to families who cannot afford funeral expenses, and the ‘Food for Hungry Citizens Program’, which provides immediate food or food grains to extremely poor, helpless, or families affected by sudden problems.
The municipality has also launched a ‘Food for Work Program’, which engages poor citizens in local development construction work and provides them with food or essential support in exchange for their labor. This program aims to promote self-reliance rather than just providing relief.
Chhathar Municipality’s approach to development is centered around its citizens, with programs focused on ensuring their financial security, health, and well-being from birth to old age.
