Birgunj Metropolitan City has declared the current fiscal year 2083/84 as the ‘Educational Reform Year’, aiming to bring about significant improvements in school education.
According to Mayor Mohanmaya Dhakal, the metropolitan city will implement various transformative programs, including the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools, a digital teacher bank, STEM education, performance contracts, and a scholarship fund worth Rs 2 crore.
The metropolitan city has also made arrangements for students from all 10 districts of the Karnali Province to participate in some of the programs.
Key Initiatives
The metropolitan city has set a target to develop Birgunj as an excellent educational hub, with a 10-year education sector plan.
As part of this plan, the metropolitan city will gradually implement the budget and programs in the education sector.
The metropolitan city also aims to strengthen the foundation of education by managing and strengthening the Early Childhood Development (ECD) class based on physical infrastructure and teaching-learning standards.
To address the shortage of subject teachers in community schools, the metropolitan city has decided to establish a digital teacher bank.
Vacant teacher positions will be filled through this bank, and the metropolitan city plans to make the Nagar-level training facilitation center more modern and effective to reduce the shortage of English, mathematics, and science teachers.
The metropolitan city will also operate a scholarship fund worth Rs 2 crore to provide financial assistance to deserving students for higher education.
In addition, the metropolitan city plans to establish an initial training center for children with autism.
Partnerships and Collaborations
The metropolitan city will collaborate with the Mid-Western University to provide financial assistance to deserving students for higher education.
The metropolitan city will also partner with non-governmental organizations and private educational institutions to improve the educational quality of community schools.
Furthermore, the metropolitan city will implement a performance contract with school principals and teachers to improve the quality of education.
The metropolitan city will also establish a ‘Think Tank’ group consisting of retired teachers and employees to provide advice and support on educational policies, plans, and reforms.
The metropolitan city will provide necessary training and capacity-building programs for teachers to improve the quality of education in community schools.
The ‘Mayor in the Classroom’ program will also be implemented, where the mayor will visit schools and interact with students.
