Nepali Congress President Rejects Proposal for Three-Party Government

Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that any proposal for a three-party government that does not include an opposition party is unacceptable.

Speaking at the 44th BP Memorial Week and the unveiling of the statue of late leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Thapa emphasized that a strong opposition is the foundation of democracy.

He pointed out that a system without an opposition is against democratic values and norms, and that both the government and the opposition are integral parts of the democratic system.

Opposition is Essential

Thapa expressed his concern that the practice of all parties participating in the government weakens the representative system.

He warned that any political practice that aims to eliminate the opposition in the name of forming or restructuring provincial governments would harm the democratic system.

Thapa stressed that the government should be formed in accordance with the constitution, the spirit of the constitution, and parliamentary traditions, respecting the people’s mandate.

Commitment to Democracy

The Nepali Congress President made it clear that his party would not support any proposal that weakens democracy, the constitutional system, and parliamentary practices.

He emphasized the need to strengthen unity, discipline, and public trust within the party, and expressed his commitment to transforming the party into a new generation as expected in the coming days.

Thapa also paid tribute to late leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, who played a key role in the democratic movement, and emphasized the need to implement the democratic values, ideals, and moral political culture established by him.
