Nepal has urged the international community to mainstream the right to development in all areas of financial cooperation, trade, debt relief, and development cooperation.
Speaking at an event titled ‘Right to Development at 40: Catalysing Global Partnerships for Inclusive and Sustainable Development’ at the United Nations headquarters, Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, stressed that sustainable development should be recognised not just as a policy goal but as a fundamental human right.
According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in New York, Ambassador Thapa noted that only 18% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are currently on track, and with just four years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, the world community must translate its commitments into concrete actions.
Ambassador Thapa emphasised the need to integrate the right to development into all areas of financial cooperation, trade, debt relief, and development cooperation, ensure meaningful participation of all in the development process, and strengthen accountability mechanisms.
He particularly stressed that the international community should treat the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) not just as recipients of cooperation but as the rightful holders of the rights guaranteed by the international community.
