Nepal Unveils New Coin Design Featuring Map and Akash Bhairab

Nepal’s government has unveiled a new design for the one-rupee coin, featuring a map of the country and an image of Akash Bhairab.

The design, which has been prepared by the Ministry of Finance, will be presented to the Cabinet for approval.

This comes after the Nepal Rastra Bank’s previous proposal to include an image of the Ghargumba in Mustang was rejected by the Cabinet.

New Design Features

According to the bank’s spokesperson, Guruprasad Paudel, the new design does not include a map of Nepal, contrary to earlier reports.

‘I have been informed that the new coin design will not feature a map of Nepal,’ he said, ‘However, the weight and size of the coin will be changed.’

The current one-rupee coin is being redesigned as its production cost has increased, making it more expensive than its face value.

‘We had previously tried to reduce the weight of the coin,’ Paudel said, ‘The current coin is made of a mixed metal, which we are trying to change to steel.’

This change is expected to reduce the production cost and have a positive impact on the environment.

Cultural Significance

The coin features 64 edges, which is a symbol of the 64 yoginis.

‘The image on the coin has cultural significance,’ Paudel said, ‘Coins are considered historical artifacts, and the images used on them have special meanings.’

The government has made changes to coin designs in the past, but the decision to include specific images is a strategic one.
