Police in Nepal have arrested a prisoner who escaped from a jail in Rautahat during a protest last year.

Prabhu Majhi, 30, was serving a 20-year prison sentence for rape and murder when he escaped from Gaur Prison in Bhadra, 2079.

Background

Majhi was convicted of raping and killing a five-year-old girl in Pokhari, Rautahat, on February 25, 2068.

The Supreme Court had sentenced him to 20 years in prison and he was serving his sentence in Gaur Prison when he escaped during the ‘Jan-Ji’ protest last year.

Arrest

Acting on a tip-off, a joint police team from the District Police Office, Rautahat, and the Area Police Office, Shivnagar, arrested Majhi from Bagahi, Rautahat, on Ashar 29, 2083.

He was handed over to the Gaur Prison authorities to resume serving his sentence, according to police spokesperson, Police Sub-Inspector Basanta Gautam.
