Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has held talks with the country’s security chiefs after a fatal shooting incident in Sunsari district. The meeting, which is currently underway at Singh Durbar, includes the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki and the IGP of the Armed Police Force, Narayan Dutt Paudel.
The talks come after a man was killed in a shooting incident involving security personnel in Sunsari’s Devanagunj municipality. The victim, 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta, was shot during a clash between two groups in Kaptaangunj. Mehta was taken to a hospital in Biratnagar for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.
According to the police, the clash erupted when one group was preparing to hold a Bolbam procession on Sunday evening and another group objected to it. The police claim they were forced to fire tear gas and aerial shots to control the situation, but when that failed, they resorted to firing live bullets.
Eight people, including several security personnel, were injured in the clash. Most of the injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Biratnagar, with several of them suffering from gunshot wounds. A curfew has been imposed in the area by the local administration.
