Nepal-China Trade Route Upgraded After Flood Damage

Nepal’s key trade route with China, the Syaphrubesi-Rasuwagadhi road, is being upgraded with the support of the Chinese government. The road suffered significant damage last year due to flooding in the Lhende River, prompting a reconstruction and expansion project.

The project aims to widen the road to two lanes, making it safer and more efficient for trade and tourism between the two countries. The Rasuwagadhi border crossing is Nepal’s busiest northern trade point, with hundreds of cargo and passenger vehicles passing through daily.

According to officials, the upgrade will increase the road’s capacity and improve safety, reducing travel time and making the transportation of goods more efficient. However, the ongoing construction work has been affected by the monsoon season, with muddy roads, landslides, and other hazards posing challenges to drivers.

Upgrades and Improvements

The upgrade project includes the construction of new retaining walls, culverts, and landslide control structures. Once completed, the Syaphrubesi-Rasuwagadhi road will be able to accommodate two-way traffic, reducing travel time and increasing the safety and efficiency of cargo transportation.

The project is expected to boost trade, tourism, and supply chain management between Nepal and China, as well as improve the overall infrastructure of the Rasuwagadhi border crossing.

Despite the challenges posed by the monsoon season, officials are working to expedite the construction process and complete the project as soon as possible.
