Nepali Communist Party (NCP) senior leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha has stated that attempts to undermine the constitution and democratic system in the name of constitutional amendment are unacceptable.

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of the 13th memorial day of Nar Bahadur Karmacharya on Saturday, Shrestha emphasized that the constitutional amendment process should move forward in a responsible manner, protecting the fundamental spirit of the constitution.

He stressed that the protection of the constitution’s basic essence and democracy should be the top priority, and amendments should only be made as necessary. Shrestha said, ‘We are prepared to amend the constitution as needed, while protecting the constitution and democracy, but we will not allow the murder of the constitution and democracy in the name of amendment.’

Shrestha also stated that academic and educational institutions should be kept free from political interference, and that the issue of imposing a ban on student organizations should not be confused with this. He also mentioned that the issue of banning trade unions is not comparable to these issues.

Shrestha questioned the current government’s appointment process, saying that the claim of being ‘free from party influence’ is not being implemented in practice. ‘In the name of being free from party influence, judges who make decisions in favor of their own party are being appointed to constitutional positions, and employees who do not follow the direction of the Chief Justice are being made heads of constitutional bodies. This needs to be reviewed to see if it can be called free from party influence.’
