Mukt Harwa Charwa Community Releases 10-Point Declaration

The Mukt Harwa Charwa community has released a 10-point declaration, known as the ‘Baridibas Declaration-2083’, which aims to address the issues of climate justice, social inclusion, and land rights for the community.

The declaration was released during a provincial-level Dalit rights conference held in Baridibas, Mahottari, which was organized by the Dalit Network Nepal and supported by the Dalit and Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Program of the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

The declaration calls for the government to recognize the Mukt Harwa Charwa community’s identity and provide them with citizenship, education, health insurance, and social security. It also demands that the government provide the community with land and housing, and ensure their participation in decision-making processes.

The declaration also emphasizes the need for climate justice and demands that the government take measures to address the impacts of climate change on the community. It calls for the government to provide support for climate-resilient agriculture and livestock farming, and to ensure the community’s access to clean energy and water.

The Mukt Harwa Charwa community is a marginalized group that has been historically excluded from mainstream society. According to a study by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in 2013, there are over 100,000 Harwa Charwa people living in eight districts of the Madhes province.

The declaration is a significant step towards recognizing the rights of the Mukt Harwa Charwa community and addressing the historical injustices they have faced. It is expected to put pressure on the government to take concrete steps towards addressing the community’s demands.
