MP Acharya Calls for Reform

Kathmandu. Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Mohanlal Acharya has emphasized the need for the country’s criminal justice system to adopt a policy of despising crime but reforming the criminal.

Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee held at Singha Durbar today, he said this while discussing the ‘report on the human rights situation of children in the correctional home’.

MP Acharya also drew the government’s attention to the legal complexities related to children and the current situation of the correctional home.

MP Acharya mentioned that the issues related to children are scattered in various laws and emphasized the need to create an ‘integrated umbrella law’.

He also presented data that about half of the children in the correctional home are above 18 years old and suggested that they should be categorized based on their age group.

He suggested that the government should regulate and coordinate the correctional homes run by civil society and the private sector.

MP Acharya expressed concern that there is a lack of coordination between the various ministries of the state and that there is not enough cooperation between the federal, state, and local levels in the federal system.

He emphasized that the state should be sensitive to the rehabilitation of children involved in child labor and create an environment where they can live a normal life without feeling inferior.
