Chief Minister of Karnali Province, Yamlal Kandel, has resigned from his post. He made the announcement while addressing a meeting of the Provincial Assembly on Saturday.
The move comes after 16 lawmakers from the Congress and the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) filed a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Kandel on Ashar 32. The Provincial Assembly was scheduled to discuss the no-confidence motion on Saturday at 3 pm.
Earlier, on Ashar 31, four ministers from the Congress party, which is a coalition partner in the Karnali Province government, had submitted their resignations. The ministers who resigned include Rajeev Bikram Shah, Minister for Economic Affairs, Vijaya Budha, Minister for Water Resources, Ghanashyam Bhandari, Minister for Social Development, and Suresh Adhikari, Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment.
Chief Minister Kandel was appointed on Chaitra 27, 2080, with the support of the then Maoist party. After the collapse of the Prachanda-led government at the center, the Congress and the UML formed an alliance in the province government as well. Accordingly, the Congress joined the Karnali Province government in Shrawan 2081.
No-Confidence Motion
The UML had been accused of betraying the Congress by not transferring power as per the earlier agreement. The Congress had alleged that the UML had broken its promise to hand over power to the Congress. The four Congress ministers had resigned in protest.
The very next day, the Congress party decided to move forward with the NCP to form a new government. Accordingly, the NCP and the Congress filed a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Kandel’s government.
