New Delhi. The Indian government has directed shipping companies, ship management companies, and recruitment agencies not to deploy Indian seafarers on vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision comes after two Indian seafarers were killed in an attack by Iran on two ships in the Hormuz area last week.
‘The security situation in the Persian Gulf region is extremely sensitive, and additional precautions need to be taken to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers on ships operating in the area,’ the Directorate General of Shipping said in its order.
According to a report by the United Nations, at least 14 seafarers have been killed in attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas since February 28, when the US-Israel-Iran war began.
Three Indian crew members of the oil tanker ‘Settebello’ were among those killed in a US attack off the coast of Oman on June 9.
