Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has agreed to step down from his position, effective Sunday midnight, after signing a constitutional amendment passed by parliament.

The amendment, pushed through by the ruling Fidesz party led by Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay, effectively removes Sulyok from office.

Sulyok’s decision to sign the amendment and relinquish his post comes amid a tumultuous period in Hungarian politics.
