Gagan Thapa Urges Debate on Making Parliament More Inclusive

Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has emphasized the need for a discussion on making the parliament more inclusive through a direct election system.

Speaking at a program organized by the Democratic Thought Society in Pokhara on Sunday, Thapa stated that any attempt to weaken the pillars of inclusive democracy would not be acceptable to the Congress.

Thapa proposed exploring the option of making the House of Representatives more inclusive through a direct election system to address the instability caused by the current mixed election system.

He suggested allocating specific areas for direct election to ensure representation of marginalized groups such as Dalits, women, and indigenous peoples.

Thapa also emphasized the need to make federalism more effective by transferring some powers and resources from the center to the provinces and local levels.

He assured that the Congress would play a responsible role in preventing the country from falling into any kind of conflict or political disaster.

Thapa stressed that broad consensus and fact-based discussions among all political forces are necessary for addressing serious issues like constitutional amendments.
