Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence tool, Grok Imagine, will create a full-length film of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, by the end of 2026.

Musk made the announcement after Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of The Odyssey started breaking box office records. Musk had earlier expressed his disapproval of the casting choices for Nolan’s film.

A ‘Historically Accurate’ Film

Musk claimed that Grok Imagine will create a film that is ‘historically accurate’ and true to Homer’s art. He also shared a three-minute short film of The Odyssey created by AI, which he posted on his social media platform, X.

However, it remains to be seen how ‘historically accurate’ an AI-generated film of The Odyssey can be, given that the epic is an ancient work of fiction that features mythical creatures such as the one-eyed Cyclops and a sorceress who turns sailors into pigs.

Musk’s announcement may have been a response to the casting choices for Nolan’s film, which he had earlier criticized. Musk had expressed his disapproval of the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, suggesting that she was chosen for the role solely to win awards.

The short AI-generated film posted by Musk features an all-white cast, which may be seen as supporting his earlier criticism of the casting choices for Nolan’s film.

Nolan’s Film a Box Office Success

Despite Musk’s criticism, Nolan’s film adaptation of The Odyssey has been a box office success, earning $264 million in its opening weekend worldwide. The film is on track to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date.
