Dispute Over Relocation of Baharakilo Market in Gorkha

A dispute has erupted among locals over the relocation of Baharakilo market in Gorkha Municipality-11, which was removed from its original location due to encroachment on public land.

Locals from Baharakilo and Tehrathum have been competing to establish the market in their respective areas, with each side claiming that their location is more suitable. The dispute has also taken a political turn, with different parties supporting different locations.

Baharakilo locals have already started constructing infrastructure, including a road, parking, and toilets, in their area. They claim that their location is more suitable due to its geography and availability of space.

On the other hand, Tehrathum locals are also preparing to establish the market in their area. They have started removing structures along the road and are working on expanding the road.

Home Minister’s Decision Criticized

Home Minister Sudhan Gurung recently visited Gorkha and directed the Chief District Officer to make the road from Tehrathum to Baharakilo one-way. However, this decision has been criticized by locals and transport entrepreneurs, who claim that it is not practical.

Baharakilo locals have warned that they will protest if the road is made one-way, as it will cause difficulties for them. Transport entrepreneurs have also expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision, citing the road’s geography and technical difficulties.

Political Interference

The dispute over the market’s relocation has also been influenced by political parties. Locals have accused the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) of pressuring the Home Minister to make the road one-way. The RSP has denied these allegations, claiming that they are only trying to revive the old market.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) has also been accused of supporting the establishment of the market in Baharakilo. However, the party has denied any involvement in the dispute.

The dispute has highlighted the need for a more transparent and inclusive decision-making process, taking into account the concerns and needs of all stakeholders.
