Crowds Flock to Indrachowk Pote Market as Shrawan Begins

Crowds of women have started flocking to the Pote market in Indrachowk, Kathmandu, as the month of Shrawan begins.

During the month of Shrawan, Hindu women buy and wear green, yellow, and red glass bangles, known as pote, as a symbol of good luck and to appease Lord Shiva.

The tradition of wearing green glass bangles during Shrawan has been adopted by women of other faiths as well.

Pote, considered a symbol of good luck in Hinduism, is originally an Iranian ornament.

The pote business is not a year-round affair, but the market sees a surge in customers during Teej, Shrawan, and the wedding season.
