Chemical Fertilizers Not a Long-Term Priority for the Government: Minister Chaudhary

Kathmandu. Minister of Agriculture, Forests, and Environment Gita Chaudhary has clarified that chemical fertilizers are not a long-term priority for the government.

Speaking at a meeting of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on Friday, Minister Chaudhary stated that the government is focused on gradually reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and promoting organic and biological fertilizers.

Minister Chaudhary mentioned that chemical fertilizers are not produced in Nepal and are considered ‘global goods’ (international commodities), making their sustainable management a priority. She expressed the government’s commitment to working with relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Agriculture, to address this issue.

Referring to the global impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on chemical fertilizer supply, Minister Chaudhary credited the Prime Minister’s leadership for ensuring the availability of fertilizers. She assured that the government has secured a sufficient supply of fertilizers for the next 3-4 months.

According to Minister Chaudhary, the government has increased the budget for organic and biological fertilizer production and is preparing to implement alternative measures (roadmap) to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers.

Minister Chaudhary emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Forests to improve soil quality and promote sustainable forest management.

The government aims to address issues such as forest fires while promoting environmental conservation and increasing agricultural productivity.
