Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from his post due to serious health issues, the President’s Office announced on Friday.

The 76-year-old president has been holding the ceremonial post since April 2023. During his tenure, the country witnessed political instability after then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left for India following a student-led movement in 2024.

According to a statement released by the President’s press secretary, Shahabuddin said, ‘Recent health tests have confirmed that I am suffering from Autonomic Neuropathy, which causes me to lose consciousness for short periods at times.’

With Shahabuddin’s resignation, the government is now left without any high-ranking officials from Sheikh Hasina’s camp, just five months before her planned return to the country. Hasina’s Awami League party has been banned, and many of its leaders and activists have been jailed or are in hiding since the 2024 student movement that toppled her government.

According to the statement, the Speaker of the House will take over the president’s duties until a new president is elected.
