Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from his post due to serious health problems, according to a statement released by the President’s Office.

The 76-year-old president had been in office since April 2023 and had been facing health issues. Recently, his health checkup revealed that he was suffering from ‘autonomic neuropathy’, a condition that causes him to lose consciousness at times.

Background

During his tenure, Bangladesh witnessed a period of political instability following a student-led movement in 2024, which led to the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country for India.

President Shahabuddin’s resignation comes at a time when Prime Minister Hasina is expected to return to the country in about five months, as per her plans. However, with the president’s resignation, there is no one left in the top echelons of the government who is close to her.

Consequences

The Awami League, led by Prime Minister Hasina, has been banned, and many of its leaders and activists have been arrested or have gone into hiding since the student movement in 2024.

According to the President’s Office, the Speaker of the Parliament will take over as the acting head of state until a new president is elected.
