The Bagmati Province government has reduced the number of ministries from 14 to eight, effective from today, Ashar 1, 2083.
Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya has recommended the merger of six ministries to the Office of the Province Chief, and the ministers of the dissolved ministries will be assigned new responsibilities without portfolios.
The six dissolved ministries are the Ministries of Labour, Employment and Transport, Culture and Tourism, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Health, Forest and Environment, and Youth and Sports.
New Ministry Assignments
According to the new ministry assignments, the government has allocated four ministries to the Nepali Congress and three to the CPN-UML.
Madhusudan Paudel of the Nepali Congress has been assigned the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Forest, while Shivraj Adhikari has been given the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Law and Cooperatives.
Kanchan Chandra Wagle has been assigned the Ministry of Health and Social Development, and Dr. Dinesh Chandra Devkota has been given the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development.
Prabhat Tamang has been assigned the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Planning, Krishna Kumar Tamang has been given the Ministry of Water Supply, Energy and Irrigation, and Bindu Shrestha has been assigned the Ministry of Industry, Tourism, Labour and Transport.
Background
The Bagmati Province has been governed by a coalition of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML since Shrawan 2081.
The Bagmati Province Assembly has 36 seats held by the Nepali Congress, 26 by the CPN-UML, 25 by the CPN (Maoist Centre), 12 by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, 3 by the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, and 2 by the Our Nepal Party.
With six members resigning to contest the parliamentary elections, the current strength of the province assembly is 104 members.
