Nepal Launches National Campaign to End Dowry System

Nepal’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rubi Kumar Thakur, and Minister for Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare, Sita Badi, have held discussions on launching a national campaign to end the dowry system.

The discussion, which took place at the Ministry on Wednesday, focused on starting a nationwide awareness campaign against dowry from the Madhesh Province and gradually expanding it across the country.

The government plans to make the campaign effective by involving local governments, schools, communities, religious and social leaders, youth, women’s groups, and civil society in organizing nationwide awareness programs.

Deputy Speaker Thakur expressed her confidence that the campaign, starting from the Madhesh Province, will send a positive message against dowry at the national level.

She emphasized the need for effective coordination between the federal government, provinces, and local governments, as well as the active cooperation of all stakeholders, to build a dowry-free society.

Minister Badi stated that the dowry system is not just a legal issue but also a social challenge, and its eradication requires a shared commitment from the state, local governments, educational institutions, civil society, media, and the community.

She expressed the view that, along with the effective implementation of the law, the campaign should also focus on bringing about behavioral changes in society.
