Nepal is observing the 48th memorial day of Pushpa Lal Shrestha, the founding general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), with various programs.
The CPN (UML) and other communist parties have organized various events to mark the day.
Pushpa Lal was born on Ashar 15, 1981 BS, in Ramchhap, to parents Bhaktalal and Tulsi Kumari. He was the younger brother of martyr Gangalal Shrestha.
Pushpa Lal had translated ‘The Communist Manifesto’ by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels into Nepali for the first time and had analyzed Nepali society through various writings and articles.
In Baisakh 2006 BS, he, along with Niranjan Govinda Vaidya, Narayan Vilas Joshi, Narbahadur Karmacharya, and Moti Devi Shrestha, established the CPN in Kolkata, India.
Before establishing the CPN, in 1998 BS, he had formed the Nepali Prajatantrik Sangh with Prem Bahadur Kansakar, Shambhu Ram Shrestha, Surya Bahadur Bhardwaj, and Ram Raja.
He believed that the Panchayat system could be overthrown through a joint people’s movement with the Nepali Congress and other democratic forces.
Pushpa Lal passed away on Shrawan 7, 2035 BS, while undergoing treatment in New Delhi, India.
On the occasion of his memorial day, the CPN (UML) Rajdhani Province Committee has organized a program, while the Nepali Communist Party has also announced various events.
