A two-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself with a gun he found hidden in a sofa, leading to the arrest of his mother.
The incident occurred at a residence in Highland, Southern California, where the boy’s mother, 20-year-old Jamaria Cobb, and her 52-year-old boyfriend, Armand Bright, were present.
According to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to the scene and attempted to save the child’s life, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Both Cobb and Bright have been arrested on felony child abuse charges and are being held on $1.35 million bail. Another child who was in the home at the time of the incident has been taken into care by Child and Family Services.
The boy’s name has not been released. The incident has shocked the community in Highland, a town with a population of around 57,000 people, located east of San Bernardino.
