Mahantha Thakur Criticizes Government, Calls for Protection of Nepal’s Sovereignty

Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) Nepal Chairman and National Assembly member Mahantha Thakur has criticized the government’s recent policies, alleging that some of its actions have weakened Nepal’s national interests and independence.

Speaking during a meeting of the National Assembly’s Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee, Thakur argued that government decisions should prioritize the interests of the Nepali people above all else. He claimed that certain policies appeared to benefit foreign interests rather than strengthening Nepal’s own sovereignty and long-term development.

In a separate political address earlier this week, Thakur also strongly criticized Prime Minister Balen Shah’s leadership style, describing it as authoritarian and warning that governance must remain accountable to democratic principles and constitutional values. His remarks have sparked discussion among political leaders and observers, adding to the ongoing debate over the government’s direction.

The veteran Madhesh leader, who was elected to the National Assembly from Madhesh Province earlier this year, continues to play an active role in parliamentary discussions despite transitioning from the House of Representatives after decades in national politics. He secured the National Assembly seat with the backing of an alliance that included the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

Thakur has consistently advocated for greater inclusion, stronger federalism, and protection of the rights of Madheshi communities. His latest statements reflect broader concerns over governance, transparency, and Nepal’s political future as Parliament continues deliberations on key national issues.

While government leaders have defended their policies, Thakur’s criticism is expected to remain part of the wider political debate in the coming parliamentary sessions.
