Late NBA player Jason Collins has been honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2026 ESPYs.
Collins, who passed away earlier this year after a battle with brain cancer, was recognized for his contributions to the league, including becoming the first openly gay active player in major professional sports in 2013.
A video tribute at the ESPYs ceremony documented Collins’ groundbreaking announcement and his subsequent health battle, highlighting the impact he left behind.
Collins’ twin brother, Jarron, accepted the award on his behalf, saying the gesture meant a great deal to him, particularly given Jason’s love of tennis and admiration for Arthur Ashe.
‘We’re humbled,’ Jarron said, ‘but also very appreciative of my brother’s life being recognized.’
Jarron added that the family is still grieving and dealing with the loss of Jason, who passed away on May 12. The NBA community came together to pay tribute to Collins, with teams holding a moment of silence in his honor.
In his speech, Jarron expressed his goal of carrying on his brother’s legacy and ensuring his impact continues to grow.
