Felony Suspect Caught After Swimming Away from Police in Los Angeles

A man wanted on a felony warrant led Los Angeles police on a foot chase before diving into the Pacific Ocean in an attempt to escape arrest.

The incident began when police stopped the man near Pacific Coast Highway and Sunset Boulevard after learning he was wanted on a felony warrant. When officers tried to detain him, he took off running towards Will Rogers State Beach and jumped into the water.

The suspect spent more than an hour treading water hundreds of yards offshore as lifeguards on rescue boards stayed close, talking to him and waiting for an opportunity to end the standoff. Eventually, LA County Lifeguards grappled with him in the water and loaded him onto a LA County Sheriff’s Department boat.

Authorities have not revealed what felony warrant the suspect was wanted on. The man’s escape plan ultimately failed, and he was taken into custody.
