116 Inmates Transferred from Bharatpur Prison Due to Overcrowding

Bharatpur Prison in Chitwan has transferred 116 inmates to other prisons due to overcrowding. According to the prison office, the transfers were made over the past year.

Chetnath Dhungana, the prison chief, stated that the inmates were transferred because the prison’s capacity had been exceeded. The prison has a total capacity of 505 inmates.

The transferred inmates were sent to various prisons, including Bhimfedhi Prison (53 inmates), Nuwakot Prison (26 inmates), Jaggannath Dewal (2 inmates), Kapilvastu Prison (17 inmates), Kaski Prison (7 inmates), Syangja Prison (4 inmates), and one inmate each to Nakhhu, Lalitpur, and Nepalgunj.

Currently, the prison has 717 inmates, consisting of 40 women and 677 men. The prison’s capacity is 505 inmates, with 30 women and 475 men.

Overcrowding has resulted in a shortage of space and difficulties in managing the prison.
